There were plenty of games to pick from to highlight in this week’s marquee matchup, but the most intriguing of them all goes to the Westside Warriors against the Whiteford Wicked Aces. Whiteford looks to reclaim first place as the Warriors look to weather the storm with their star player Evan Bortmas not in the line up.

Home sweet home, the Aces have nothing but home games from here on out as we progress on in this 2014 season. We all know that the Aces can pitch, but the big issue for them as of late has been the inability to hit, and the loss of Joel Crozier for the remainder of the year doesn’t help their cause. Look for the Bischoff bros to pick up the slack against the Warriors as the Aces search for answers at the plate. Coming down the home stretch of the season, the Aces need to at the very least split against the Warriors this week so they don’t fall too far behind from first place in the standings.

The Warriors look to travel to the deep south without their all-star Evan Bortmas and maintain the slim lead they hold on the Ringler division. Not so fast though, Shore has a secret weapon that he’s bringing along with him for this pivotal two game series: Jeremy Ratajczyk, the commissioner of Griffle Ball, and word on the street is that he swings a hot stick. Maybe he will shoulder some of the load with Bortmas not in attendance. A split here is much needed at the very least for the Warriors as well, so they can maintain their first place status in Ringler.

This match up has potential playoff implications. Look for low scoring, very competitive games with this series. If you don’t have anything going on this weekend, go down to Whiteford and check out some high quality wiffle action.

Week 9 Marquee & Picks

David Castle (1.125 OPS, 19 RBI)

Nicco Lollio (.928 OPS, 7 RBI)

Stephen Werner (1.250 OPS, 5 HR)

Dylan Braden (1.062 OPS, 22 RBI)

Brandon Corbett (1.003 OPS, 20 RS)
Week 9 isn’t the most exciting week this season. Only one matchup features two teams with winning records, Aces @ Squirrels, but we didn’t want to give the Aces back to back marquees. The only other intriguing matchup of the week is King Friday @ Holy Balls. It will be the first time these Garcia Division rivals have met this season, and they will also play Week 12 in Lincoln Park. A lot is riding on this matchup, as both teams need a sweep to stay relevant in the playoff race.

Both squads enter Week 9 with a Wild Card elimination # of 9.

King Friday has been on a rollercoaster ride this season. From losing their entire roster, to acquiring the reigning rookie of the year, to losing to the Islanders, to sweeping the Aces, and now a four game losing streak. You can make a case for the Holy Balls that a split this week isn’t earth shattering, but a split for King Friday would be. At 6-10, and with six teams currently over the .500 mark, Castle and Company can’t afford to lose many more games. They caught a huge break this week as Chris Paquin is ineligible to pitch in either game. Castle has a tough decision as he has to decide which two pitchers to throw. It is a safe bet Nicco Lollio will get one of the starts, as he has moved into the ace role for the team. The other pitcher will be either Castle, who has battled some injuries lately, or Stephen Werner, their rookie midseason acquisition. Whoever it is, they will face a tough test as the Holy Balls have some of the most dangerous power hitters in the league.

The Holy Balls took note from what happened Week 1 when they pulled Paquin after the 8th inning against the Wolfpack, and it ultimately cost them the game. They stuck with him vs. El Diablos last week and it paid off as they won the game 5-1 to improve to 8-10. Before the season started it was clear it would be the Pearson/Paquin show on the hill, and now they go into a series and it is a safe bet it will be the D. Braden/Corbett show. With Paquin ineligible and Pearson’s accuracy struggles, it won’t be easy for the Balls. Dylan has had a decent year as the fill-in #2, but Corbett has never fully adjusted to the 48’ distance, and will need a lot of help on defense and run support to win the game. It isn’t set in stone that Pearson won’t pitch, he has been given a lot of chances this year, and his leash is getting shorter and shorter. So I wouldn’t be completely shocked to see him start a game and get pulled early if he is looking wild.

We’ve had a lot of boring pitcher’s duels this year, so if you like hitting and defense and close high scoring games, come to Wyandotte Saturday morning to watch this series. Both teams will be very intensely into these games, and every inning will be fun to watch. This may also be the last week you see these two teams with their current rosters, as both have them have been rumored to make some trades before the Tuesday, 6/24 deadline.
