Evan Bischoff (4 HR, 0.97 WHIP) This week’s marquee matchup features two teams needing victories to remain in the playoff hunt. The Wolfpack (6-12) are in desperate need of two victories if they want to be playing in August. The Aces (5-5) are in a slightly better position, but anything other than a sweep this week could put them reaching to get in to the play-in game.
Coming off a Championship last year, the Aces have underperformed immensely and stumbled out of the gates to find themselves in 3rd place in the Ringler division. The Wolfpack have struggled since their 3-3 start to the year. However, coming off a 6-4 victory against the Squirrels, they could be settling into a rhythm for the rest of the year.
The strength of the Wolfpack is undoubtedly their hitting. As a team, the Wolfpack are in the upper half of the league in AVG (.244) and OPS (.846), and have the second best On-Base Percentage in the league (.463). The Brannan Brothers are quietly having All-Star caliber seasons and are the primary hitters on the team, both have an AVG above .340 and an OBP above .495. Additionally, the Brannan Brothers account for over 80% of the teams HR total. Ultimately, if the Wolfpack are looking to avoid being swept, hitting is going to have to lead them to victory.
The Aces, contrary to the Wolfpack, find most of their issues at the dish. The Aces are in the lower half of the league in AVG (.203) and OPS (.757), and have the second worst On-Base Percentage in the league (.351). The only real positive offensively is their power. The Aces average 1.5 dingers/game, tied for best in the league with the slugging Holy Balls. Also, Joel Crozier has put himself in the All-Star conversation with a .286 AVG and 5 HR against some very good competition. Overall, the Wolfpack appear to have the upperhand when it comes to hitting.
Pitching, however, is where this matchup becomes slightly lopsided. Statistically, the Aces are the best pitching team in the league with a disgusting 1.07 ERA. The Wolfpack, however, have struggled finding consistent pitching all year and have a sloppy ERA of 10.80. Overall, this matchup involves one the leagues better hitting teams going head-to-head with one of the league’s best pitching rotations. Between the two teams, several potential All-Stars will be dueling it out against each other.
On an unrelated note, this weekend will also feature the opening of the Aces home, Poolside Park. After undergoing several renovations and improvements throughout the offseason, Poolside Park is poised reclaim the title of best field in the league, and, potentially, one of the best in the nation.
